Speech Time Calculator: Words to Minutes
A speech time calculator converts a word count into speaking time at a rate you choose. Paste your script or type 750 words, set slow (120), average (150) or fast (180) words per minute, and read the time in minutes and seconds. The estimate assumes a steady pace with no pauses.

| 3 | 450 | 3:00 |
| 5 | 750 | 5:00 |
| 10 | 1500 | 10:00 |
| 15 | 2250 | 15:00 |
| 20 | 3000 | 20:00 |
How the calculator works
The formula is time in minutes = words ÷ words per minute. The reverse panel uses words = minutes × words per minute. Seconds are shown as a clock, so 300 seconds appears as 5:00.
The three rate buttons are planning presets, not measurements of your voice. The only external rate claim on this page is the average and the recommendation cited in the answer above, from Speaking Rate, Tools for Clear Speech, Baruch College. Use a custom rate if you have timed yourself.
Numbers in the table are rounded to the nearest word. The clock is rounded to the nearest second. Nothing is sent to a server: the arithmetic runs in this browser tab.
Worked example
A 750-word script at 150 words per minute takes 750 ÷ 150 = 5 minutes, shown as 5:00. In a 3-minute slot at 120 words per minute you can fit 3 × 120 = 360 words. A 600-word answer at 180 words per minute takes 600 ÷ 180 = 3.33 minutes, shown as 3:20.
If your script is 900 words and you have 5 minutes, the rate you need is 900 ÷ 5 = 180 words per minute. That is a calculation, not advice: try it aloud before you trust it.
What the estimate leaves out
A steady-rate estimate ignores the two things that change real timing most: pauses and fillers. To measure the pace you actually read at, use the words per minute speaking test. To see how many filler words are in a transcript, use the filler word counter.
The better test is a story you care about. Read a true story at your level, put the script away and retell it aloud. Then compare the measured result with this estimate. The methodology page explains what SoulfulStories measures in a retelling and what it does not.
Questions and answers
How many words is a 5 minute speech?
At 150 words per minute, 750 words. At 120 wpm it is 600 words, and at 180 wpm it is 900 words. Pick the rate closest to how you actually speak; the calculator uses whichever rate you select.
How many words per minute do people speak?
Baruch College's Tools for Clear Speech puts the average English speaker at about 150 words per minute, and suggests about 140 for clear intelligibility. Rates vary with language, context and nerves. Source: https://tfcs.baruch.cuny.edu/speaking-rate/
Does the estimate include pauses?
No. It assumes a steady rate for every word. Real speech includes breaths, pauses for thought and reactions from listeners, so leave room in your time slot.
How many words is a 3 minute speech?
At 150 words per minute, 450 words. At 120 wpm it is 360 words, and at 180 wpm it is 540 words.
Can I paste my whole script?
Yes. Paste it into the box, read the word count and press Use this count. Hyphenated words count once and punctuation is ignored.
Why does 750 words at 150 words per minute show 5:00?
Because 750 ÷ 150 = 5 minutes. The calculator divides the word count by the rate, then displays the result as minutes and seconds.
Keep going
This calculator assumes a steady pace.
A real retelling has pauses, fillers and changes of speed. SoulfulStories records you retelling a true story and measures the pace, pauses and fillers you actually produce.
