Yoodli alternative: where each one is better
Yoodli is better than us at interview and meeting roleplay, and its free tier gives you five sessions with no weekly reset. SoulfulStories is the better fit if you want to practise telling a story out loud and be scored on whether the facts survived, not on a simulated conversation.

What does Yoodli do well?
Yoodli is an AI roleplay coach. You talk, an AI persona talks back, and you get scored on delivery, clarity, pacing and effectiveness. For a conversation that will run in both directions, it does more than we do.
Three things are worth knowing before you compare prices.
It rehearses a conversation, not a speech. You pick a persona and a scenario, then practise discovery calls, objection handling, demos or interviews by video, chat or avatar. The AI can push back, ask a follow-up you did not prepare for, and play a whole buying committee (Yoodli Roleplays, read 2026-10-26).
It watches you. If you practise on camera, Yoodli reports the percentage of time you made eye contact with the webcam (Yoodli's own guide, read 2026-10-26). We are audio only, so that number cannot exist here.
It has a team product. Business and Enterprise plans add SSO, SCIM, admin dashboards, LMS and CRM integrations, and the company states SOC 2 Type 2 and GDPR compliance on its pricing page (Yoodli pricing, read 2026-10-26). We have no team features at all.
Where does Yoodli fall short for story practice?
The content is a scenario, not a text. That single difference decides most of this comparison.
When you retell a true story, there is a right answer to check against: the year, the place, who did what, how it ended. A roleplay has no such answer. The AI persona may object, agree or change the subject, but nobody can mark you wrong, because nothing was fixed in advance. So Yoodli's report can tell you that you spoke fast or looked away. It cannot tell you that you said the planet was found in 1932 when it was 1930.
Two practical limits come from the pricing page as well. The free Starter plan includes five lifetime roleplays, not five a month, and the Pro plan at $8 per month billed annually allows up to 10 roleplays a week. Cancellation stops auto-renewal and Yoodli does not offer refunds (Yoodli pricing, read 2026-10-26).
The same ninety seconds, in both apps
Here is one task done twice. The task: tell the story of the girl who named Pluto.
The source text on our side opens with three sentences you would read first:
In March 1930, an 11-year-old girl named Venetia Burney was eating breakfast in Oxford, England. Her grandfather was reading the newspaper and told her some big news: scientists had found a new planet, far away. It did not have a name yet.
In Yoodli. You sign in, choose a scenario or write one ("explain a decision to a sceptical colleague"), and start a session. You speak for a minute and a half. The AI replies, you answer, the timer runs. Afterwards you get a transcript, a set of delivery scores, an eye-contact percentage if the camera was on, and a few suggestions. The session is useful. What it cannot tell you is whether the story you told was the story.
In SoulfulStories. You open the story, read it twice at the beginner level (214 words), and press record. You retell it from memory for ninety seconds. About a minute later the report shows your pace over time, your pauses split into planned and hesitant, fillers, pitch and volume, how the emotional beats landed, and a fact check that names each miss: "You said the name was made official in 1932. It was 1 May 1930." If fewer than 70% of the facts survive, or a critical one is distorted, the whole score is capped at 59 and the level does not pass (how the facts floor works).
That is the whole trade. Yoodli gives you a partner who answers. We give you a text that can be got wrong.
How do the two compare, side by side?
Every Yoodli cell below comes from its pricing page, its roleplay page or its eye-contact guide, all read on 2026-10-26. Every SoulfulStories cell comes from our product documentation.
| Yoodli | SoulfulStories | |
|---|---|---|
| What you practise | A roleplay: interview, sales objection, pitch, or a custom scenario with an AI persona | A true story you have just read, retold from memory |
| Feedback | Delivery, clarity, pacing and effectiveness; eye-contact percentage when the camera is on | Pace, pauses, fillers, pitch, volume, emotion, impact, craft, vocabulary, and fact coverage |
| Is accuracy scored? | No. A roleplay has no fixed facts to get wrong | Yes. A failed facts check caps the score at 59 |
| Content | Scenarios and personas you or your organisation define; Yoodli says its roleplays support 28+ languages | 96 published true stories, each in three levels; English only |
| Free tier | 5 roleplays in total, then it stops | 3 retellings per rolling 7 days |
| Cheapest paid plan | Pro, $8/month billed annually, up to 10 roleplays a week | $12/month, or $96/year |
| Unlimited option | Advanced, $20/month billed annually, unlimited roleplays | No unlimited plan; Pro allows 300 retellings a calendar month |
| Live voice | Yes, an AI persona in video, chat or avatar | Yes, listener and conversation modes, 120 minutes a month on Pro |
| Team and admin | SSO, SCIM, dashboards, LMS and CRM integrations | None |
| Platform | Web | Web only, no native apps |
Four rows are losses for us and should be read that way: the free-tier shape, the unlimited option, the team features, and the monthly price.
Who should pick Yoodli?
Pick Yoodli if the conversation is the thing you are afraid of.
That covers interview candidates rehearsing answers to questions they cannot predict, sales teams practising objections, managers preparing a hard feedback conversation, and anyone whose employer already pays for a seat. It also covers the person who wants one camera-based cue about eye contact, which no audio-only tool can give.
If your deadline is an interview next week and your problem is what to say when they ask "tell me about a time when…", Yoodli's roleplay is closer to the real room than a story retelling is.
Who should pick SoulfulStories?
Pick SoulfulStories if your speaking is one-directional: a talk, a wedding speech, a class presentation, an IELTS long turn, a Toastmasters slot.
In all of those you hold the floor alone for two to five minutes, and the thing that fails is rarely the vocabulary. It is the shape: you bury the opening, you lose the middle, you trail off. Retelling a story you have just read gives you a fixed target to be accurate against, which is the only way a report can say "this part went missing".
It also suits the English learner at B1 to C1 who wants the content chosen for them. Reading a 214-word story and telling it back is a smaller, safer step than improvising a conversation with a stranger. If that is the shape of your problem, start with what a retelling is before you pay for anything.
Can you use both?
Yes, and the split is clean: stories for delivery and accuracy, Yoodli for the follow-up questions.
A pattern that works before a presentation: retell a story twice in a week to fix your openings and your pacing, then take the same content into a Yoodli roleplay where someone interrupts you and asks why it matters. Ours measures the telling. Theirs measures the answering. Neither is a substitute for the other, and the two subscriptions together cost about $16 a month on the annual plans.
If you are rehearsing alone without a partner and cannot decide, practising a speech alone is the cheaper starting point, because it needs no subscription at all.
Which is cheaper?
Yoodli is cheaper month to month. Over a year the two cost the same.
Yoodli Pro is $8 per month billed annually. Our Pro plan is $12 per month, or $96 a year, which is also $8 a month. So the annual totals are the same and the monthly totals are not: $8 against $12. Yoodli's pricing page also has a monthly billing toggle, but the monthly figure is not stated in the text of the page we could read, so check it in their checkout before you decide.
Yoodli's free tier is better for a one-off trial, because five sessions do not expire. Ours is better for a habit, because three retellings return every week. Neither free plan is enough to judge a month of practice, which is the honest answer to "which free tier is more generous": they are shaped differently.
What you get for the money differs more than the price does. One is a conversation partner with a rubric. The other is a library of 96 sourced stories and a report that can mark your facts wrong. The dated notes behind every competitor claim on this page are in the full competitor notes.
Questions and answers
Is there a free Yoodli alternative?
Yes. SoulfulStories is free for three retellings per rolling seven days. Yoodli's Starter plan gives you five roleplays in total, then stops.
Is Yoodli good for IELTS?
Partly. It is useful for the follow-up questions in Part 3, because an AI persona answers you. It does not check whether the facts in your long turn were right, and we found no IELTS band scoring on its pages.
Does SoulfulStories do roleplay?
There are two live-voice modes: a listener who reacts while you tell the story, and a conversation partner who asks questions about it for about four minutes. Roleplay is secondary here; the retelling comes first.
Which one is cheaper?
Yoodli Pro is $8 per month billed annually, and so is our yearly plan at $96. Yoodli is cheaper if you want to pay month to month, because our monthly price is $12.
